Fire Starters

Age Range: 10 - 17 years
Time Required: 10 - 20 minutes

Learn how to create your own fire starters with items that you may find around your home. This is a great item to take on camping trips incase you forget to pack the matches!

This activity is suitable for themes such as camp preparation, outdoor cooking, winter, life skills, recycling and could be done face to face or individually while your Unit meets online.

Materials Needed

  • Egg Cartons
  • Drier fluff/lint
  • Tiny sticks, dry fern & grass (punk)
  • Old candles
  • Matches
  • Scissors

Instructions

1. Cut lid off egg carton, cut egg section in half.
2. Place a little punk in each of the egg wells.
3.  Place some drier fluff on top of the punk.
4. Light a candle and carefully drip melted wax on to the fluff.
5. Cut up into single or double fire starters & store in a dry container.

  • Talk about the benefits of recycling and how they can recycle at home.
  • Have the girls share there camping experiences.

     

  • As a Unit Leader, How Can I Make This Activity Girl Led?

  • Have the girls discuss what recycling practices they do in their own home.
  • Have the girls discuss what their favourite camp cooking recipes are.

     

  • As a Unit, how can we make sure everyone is included?

  • Allocate each girl one of the materials to bring to share with the Unit to create the fire starters.
